Role within service-learning: Service-Learning Teaching Assistant
Service-Learning should be incorporated into every course, in every school, period. Can you tell I have strong opinions about this? In a nutshell, I believe it is crucial for students to step outside the confines of a classroom to both learn about and engage with what’s going on around them. No subject is exempt from this – whether they’re studying social justice or microbiology, students should understand what community they live in and occupy, and what world they are entering when they graduate. Service-Learning provides the opportunity to stretch oneself and be an active citizen, all while applying learned skills from class – what could be better?
How are your values expressed through your community engagement and service-learning work?
As both a previous Service-Learning student and current teaching assistant, I love interacting with local organizations who do amazing and important work – either through direct service or coordination for my students. Doing socially just community work is more important now than ever, and I’m so motivated by what I see being done throughout the city. Any part that I can have in helping or facilitating that is super rewarding!
If service-learning was a color what would it be?
Rainbow, of course. Because it is vibrant and involves many different actors who work in conjunction to try to make something beautiful happen.
