Role within service-learning: Ethos Volunteer Coordinator AmeriCorps*Vista

What is one thing everyone should know about service-learning?

Service-Learning is a great way to put into practice all of the skills you have been learning in the classroom. Reflecting on your service challenges you to further understand what you have gained from your experience. It can be fun looking back on old reflection pieces to see how your views have changed throughout your volunteer experience!

How are your values expressed through your community engagement and service-learning work?

The Volunteer Services Department at Ethos attempts to foster social interaction and respect cultural diversity. We are currently in the process of translating our volunteer materials into Spanish with the help of Northeastern service-learning students. This will help us reach a greater number of volunteers as well as provide volunteer services to more seniors who may not be able to participate in our programs due to the language barrier! In the past, NU students have also volunteered as Friendly Visitors and reflected on their experiences of visiting with senior’s in their homes.

If Service-Learning was a kitchen utensil, what would it be?

A can opener! When you put in a little bit of effort, service-learning can open you up to new, great experiences!
