Role within service-learning: Community Partner-Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, AmeriCorps VISTA at 826 Boston

How are your values expressed through your community engagement and service-learning work?

There’s no “one way” to volunteer. In the past we’ve had S-L students tutor high schoolers during their school day, work with elementary school students on creative writing in after-school programs, help students write their college essays on the weekend, and even serve as part of a ridiculous publishing team led by our fictional Mr. Klobbersteen on student field trips. No matter what your availability or interests are, there’s an opportunity waiting for you.

How are your values expressed through your community engagement and service-learning work?

We believe that everyone’s writing has the potential to create strong, unique stories. I think so much of the work involved with service-learning and engaging of communities comes from just listening to other people, absorbing their perspectives and using them to shape action. That we get to help develop those writing skills and those stories is only an added plus.

If service-learning was a type of kitchen utensil what would it be?

A handheld apple peeler. It helps people really see the communities they’re serving–peeling back the layer of skin to get at what’s truly underneath. Handheld because it’s more convenient to use!
