Role within service-learning: Service-Learning student
Service-Learning course: Advanced Chinese 1, Served with Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly
Did you find service-learning or did service-learning find you?
service-learning found me as it was already integrated into the curriculum for my Advanced Mandarin course.
What is one thing everyone should know about service-learning?
As you interact with the members of your service-learning site on a weekly basis, you develop relationships with them and become a part of their community. Spending two hours a week with them may not seem like much but it definitely has a lasting impact.
What was your favorite memory during your service-learning course?
I was helping Mr. Hoi Sang Wong use his iPad to send his daughter a text message. After connecting his device to the WiFi and sending his daughter a message about his upcoming doctor’s appointment, Mr. Wong’s daughter replied by saying “okay, nice to see that you are texting dad.” Seeing his daughter’s reply was hugely fulfilling and memorable that I was able to help Mr. Wong communicate with his daughter.
If service-learning was a song, what song would it be?
Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin (月亮代表我的心) by Teresa Teng. The song means ‘the moon represents my heart’ by famous Chinese singer Teresa Teng. I played it at the service-learning site and the elderly community members at Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly joined me in singing the song as soon as they realized it was one of their childhood favorites!
